The children we rescue from violence, send to school, and protect from traffickers belong to communities that have no access to any kind of healthcare, not even basic care. They are often born on the streets or in slums, certainly not in hospitals, and are therefore not registered at the registry office: they do not have a birth certificate, so they do not exist for the government, even when they need medical care. Our intervention cannot therefore ignore their health needs: we are committed to this by organizing regular assessments and “home” care in their communities through mobile clinics, supporting the Hope Hospital for street people by providing diagnostic tools and operators, and building and developing the entire laboratory department. We assist disabled children in rural areas who, before our care, had never left their shacks, and we provide psychological support and therapy to traumatized children taken in by our emergency shelters, residential homes, and street schools. But our broadest and most impactful commitment to society is in education: in every project we undertake, qualified healthcare workers patrol the sidewalks, slums, and rural villages where we provide assistance, as well as our schools, to inform children and families about basic hygiene rules, necessary vaccinations, and the correct use of the medicines distributed by our healthcare workers. Attention to uncontaminated food and water is also crucial in the desperate living conditions of these people: for this reason, we have built a well for drinking water in the countryside near Calcutta.
