Calcutta is the city with the highest number of street children in the world. 250,000 children live in desperate conditions, on the sidewalks without shelter, in squatter slums, along railroad tracks, or among the mountains of garbage in a large open-air landfill. They are constantly exposed to various forms of violence: physical, economic, and sexual abuse. Their daily lives consist of child labor, early marriage, human trafficking, child prostitution, but also hunger, without any access to education or medical care. The only way out of this cycle of ignorance and violence has been shown to be school, because only with a quality education can these children access the training and skills necessary to find decent work and break the cycle of poverty in their families of origin.
